Modern house extension and remodel, Chester Road North, Sutton Coldfield

Client: Private family

Completion: 2025

Build cost including kitchen and bathrooms: £150,000 TBC

Modern extension and interior/exterior remodel to a traditional period 4 bedroom family home in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

The clients required a larger, modern connected home for their family because their traditional period home was a series of cold, dark and and fragmented rooms. They required a large kitchen as the heart of their home to serve family gatherings and dining, additional bedroom and storage, accessible ground washroom for elderly family, and open-plan living including a lounge that can be separated with a flexible folding partition for both private spaces and also social events and interactions. Surrounding rooms and corridors maintain the ‘race circuit’ for children to run and play around.

The kitchen, dining room and lounge all had to take advantage of the large south facing garden and the outdoors, achieved with a series of carefully orchestrated bi-fold doors, windows and roof lanterns, and a vaulted (pitched) ceiling to create an airy and uplifting sun lounge. The client brief was to create a room bright like their existing south-facing conservatory but without the associated problems such as being too cold in winter and over-heating in summer. Larger bedrooms with en-suites and a new master bathroom was also required, with the experience of waking up in sunlit rooms to promote circadian rhythm and get-up-and-go! Natural light and ventilation were fundamental requirements to maximise lofty and liberating sensation and promote wellbeing, as well as reducing energy bills. All the spaces thread together to form a delightful experience which promotes happy healthy living for the family, and providing them with the feeling of loving their home.

Finally the client required a grand front-entrance experience with shelter, which we provided with an open portico canopy designed with expressive and characteristic timber frame.
